Football: Should Christians Be Involved?

Australians love their football. Whether it be Rugby League, Rugby Union, or Aussie Rules, huge crowds of devotees, both men and women, young and old, can be found every weekend, packing out stadiums and sports fields throughout the land, passionately barracking for their teams and their heroes. But, I want to raise the question: "Should Christians be involved in the 'game' of football, at any level? - whether it be physically as one of the team, personally attending the matches as a spectator, or simply as a 'Norm', or 'Couch Potato', watching the game at home on the TV?"

In my experience, asking this question of Christians has produced an assortment of responses, some quite emotional, and an increasing number strenuously defend their belief that there is no harm to be done by their involvement with the game, at any level. "What could possibly be wrong with footy?" they ask. "Surely God is not against Christians having a bit of fun and entertainment, is He?"

But what does Scripture indicate should be our response? What is God's mind on the subject of football as a sport, or as entertainment? Does He even really care? I believe He does care, for a number of reasons which I will outline below, and I base my belief, not upon my own personal likes or dislikes, but upon what I see in the Word of God. For us, as professing Christians, the Bible reveals God's mind and thoughts on any given subject and it must be our foundation for everything pertaining to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). The Word of God is the object by which we are to have our senses exercised to discern both good and evil (Hebrews 5:14).

The primary reason for my unpopular conclusions about football and for even bothering to write this article at all is because of my experience with a number of Christian brothers who were caught up in the exhilaration and competitiveness of the game, and my observations as to how it adversely affected their Christian walk and testimony.

May I say here at the outset, my desire is not that you, my Christian brother or sister in Christ, should simply follow me and conform to my beliefs and standards on this issue, but rather, that you should examine the situation, as it now escalates in the churches, with regards to football and similar sporting events, allowing the light of Scripture to reveal to you God's view of what is taking place. Pray, study the Scriptures and seek God's face, and come to your own conclusions as to what He would, or would not, have you believe and do.

A cursory study of the Church's stance on the theater will reveal her complete and utter condemnation of it. There are many ministers and councils who have condemned it. Even pious heathen have denounced the theater. It is a form of idolatry.

Evangelist Andrew Kellysays...

Sports is of the devil period. Childish thing to watch two grown up men fight. It's of not God, we have no scriptures in the bible that tells us to engage a life of riot. No faith in sports just filth. Sports is for the sinners, no sin in sports, it is for sinners. Sinners mess up and goto hell after.

People have faith in sports and where is the faith when it comes to the bible words? None at all. Sports is carnal worldly were people learn to: swear, smoke, talk profoundly, drink, pervert, and live a life of riot and fornicate. The reason why people are in the sports complex because the preacher/priest is there and the people are just as pervert as their priest/preacher; twofold yet making a grab for the pocketbook by using vain deceit. We who are born of God through Christ we give up childish things, we give up the gloves and childish things and pickup our cross the whole armour of God the bible words Ephesians 6.

When you do not receive the love of the truth Jesus Christ and his words in you, you need them sports and complexes to take you to hell with them in their den of iniquity. The church loves sports as they are interested in feeding off man's sin by offering the world instead of the word and telling man to clean up.

1st Cor 13:11] When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

Ecc 11:9] Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

[10] Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.

Col 2:8] Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

2nd Thess 2:10] And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

[11] And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

[12] That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

This is just another great messages. billions of people follow sports... other way leaving the original way behind.... JESUS CHRIST IS COMING SOON....

A colleague of mine is challenging me to prove to him scripturally that following sports is not a good thing. Any help?

This is an encouraging 'opinion' in light of the caveat in the 5th paragraph encouraging readers to examine this situation. I would encourage them to examine this paper and seek wise and Godly council as it generalizes very specific situations of God's call on specific individuals as an outcome for all. This is very dangerous. As an Evangelical Minister I too would find it difficult to exist in a Church which promoted this line unless it was willing to also call every other aspect of our lives into question. If this occurred Christians would all withdraw from life as we await the return of our gracious Lord, Jesus Christ who commanded believers to "go and make disciples, teaching them to obey and Baptizing in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit." I don't know that He expected us to avoid the football ground as a place containing people not worthy of hearing of God's love for them. Mt 16:5-12 and I should also be held to this same standard.

That Christians should not be involved in football does not stop them from evangelizing.

I thank God for this wonderful article which the Lord wants to open many eyes though. Any one who is a christian and has the spirit of God in him/her would know that football does not give glory to God but rather football is a distraction from the devil to the Christian. I am a born again Christian by the grace of God and some weeks ago the church suggested a football competition between the branch of the church where I worship and the headquarters, the first day we went for the training when I was coming back I was bordered in NY spirit and I knew it was because of the game I tried to continue with the training in order not to offend my pastor but I have to please God Almighty who loved me and gave his only begotten that I might gain eternal life in him. Today I no longer play football it is not the business of the kingdom of God neither is it the mandate of the kingdom of God but the hope of calling is eternal life through Jesus Christ. Football is a distraction to the follower of Christ.
