Verse 1

lamented. As for a second Moses. Compare Jeremiah 15:1.

in = by, or near.

down. Topography here is most exact. It is a continuous descent to the Negeb for more than a day's journey.


Verse 2

man. Hebrew. "ish. App-14.

possessions were: or, business [was].


Verse 3

the man. Note the introversion of the four lines of this verse:

Nabal = foolish.:

of the house of Caleb = a Calebite. But Septuagint, Syriac, and Arabic have translated the word "cynical".

him that liveth = the bon vivant.

water. Septuagint reads "wine".

men. Hebrew. "enosh. App-14.

stuff = baggage.

bundle of life = bag (as in 1 Samuel 17:40, 1 Samuel 17:49) of the living.

sling out: i.e. like the stones in David's sling.

shed blood causeless = shed innocent blood. Figure of speech Antimereia (of Adverb). App-6.

avenged = saved.

advice = good taste.

accepted thy person = uplifted thy face.
