chariots = cavalry. Used of men as well as horses, see 1 Chronicles 19:18. Compare 2 Samuel 10:6.

gate = entrance.


Verse 10

was set against him = confronted him.


Verse 12

children = sons.


Verse 16

river = Euphrates.

Hadarezer. Some codices, with two early printed editions, read "Hadadezer". Compare 1 Chronicles 18:3.
