Deuteronomy 19

Verse 1

When. Compare Numbers 35:10, Numbers 35:11. succeedeth = dispossessest.


Verse 2

three cities. Compare Numbers 35:14.


Verse 3

coasts = borders, or confines.


Verse 4

ignorantly. Compare Exodus 21:12.


Verse 5

As when. Figure of speech Synecdoche (of Species), App-6, one example put for every kind.

head. Hebrew = Iron.

helve = handle. Hebrew = wood, which may mean the handle or the tree.


Verse 6

avenger = kinsman avenger.

slay him = slay his soul. Hebrew. nephesh (App-13), i.e. take his life.


Verse 8

as = according as.


Verse 9

this day. See note on Deuteronomy 4:26.

blood = guilt. Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), the blood shed put for guilt incurred.

smite him mortally = smite his soul. Hebrew. nephesh (App-13) = take his life. Compare Deuteronomy 19:6.

blood = murder. Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), App-6. Compare Deuteronomy 19:10.
