Deuteronomy 8

Verse 1

commandments. Hebrew singular = every commandment.

this day. See note on Deuteronomy 4:26.

the LORD = Jehovah. App-4.


Verse 2

God = Hebrew "Elohim. App-4.

forty. The number of Probation. See App-10.

to know = get to know. Figure of speech Anthropopatheia. App-6.

commandments. Written in Hebrew text plural, but read singular, Compare Deuteronomy 6:25 = the whole Law regarded as one great command.


Verse 3

manna. See note on Exodus 16:31.

man. Hebrew. "adam. This verse quoted by Christ. Matthew 4:4. Luke 4:4.

by. Figure of speech Ellipsis (App-6) = "by [eating] bread".

bread = food, by Figure of speech Synecdoche (of Species), App-6,

by every. Figure of speech Ellipsis (App-6) = "by [keeping] every word": or by obeying.

mouth. Figure of speech Anthropopatheia. App-6.


Verse 4

Thy raiment. Compare Deuteronomy 29:5. Nehemiah 9:20, Nehemiah 9:21. Not mentioned in Exodus, Leviticus, or Numbers.


Verse 6

as = according as.

a man. Hebrew "ish. App-14.

chasteneth = correcteth, applicable to instruction as well as chastisement. 2 Samuel 7:14. Psalms 89:32. Proverbs 3:12.

his son. Compare Proverbs 3:12 and Hebrews 12:5, Hebrews 12:6.


Verse 7

hills = mountains.


Verse 8

vines. All three (fig, olive, and vine) mentioned in this verse. See notes on Judges 9:8-12.


Verse 9

scarceness. Hebrew. miskenuth = poverty, misery; occurs only here.

brass = bronze, or copper.


Verse 11

forget. Note the emphasis put on this by the Structure, as in the whole book. Compare Judges 3:7. Hosea 13:6.

judgments, and . . . statutes. See note on Deuteronomy 4:1.


Verse 12

and. Note the Figure of speech Polysyndeton (App-6), in Deuteronomy 8:12 and Deuteronomy 8:13.


Verse 14

bondage = bondmen, put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Adjunct), App-6.


Verse 15

wilderness = desert, Compare Deuteronomy 1:19.

serpents. Hebrew. nachash.

drought. Hebrew. zimm"on. Only here and Psalms 107:33, and Isaiah 35:7. Who brought. Compare Psalms 114:8.


Verse 17

wealth. Hebrew = strength, put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Adjunct) for the wealth it procures. App-6.


Verse 20

destroyeth. Hebrew "abad, cause to perish.
