Verse 1

were clean passed over = were finished passing over.

the LORD. Hebrew. Jehovah. App-4.

Verse 2

men. PI of "ish or "enosh. See App-14.

man. Hebrew. "lsh. App-14.


Verse 4

children = sons.


Verse 5

before = in the presence of.

God. Hebrew. Elohim. App-4.


Verse 6

their fathers. These words are read in some codices, with four early printed editions, as in Joshua 4:21.


Verse 8

as = according as.

took up. Four things said of these memorial stones in Joshua 4:8 and Joshua 4:9, (1) taken up; (2) carried over; (3) laid down; (4) set up.

there. See note on Joshua 8:30.


Verse 9

twelve. Septuagint has "other twelve". There were two twelves.


Verse 12

Reuben. Compare Numbers 32:27. Compare Joshua 1:12.

armed = by fives. Compare Joshua 6:7, Joshua 6:9. These formed the van.


Verse 13

prepared for war = ready armed.


Verse 14

On that day. Compare Joshua 3:7.


Verse 20

took out. Compare verses: Joshua 4:8, Joshua 4:9.


Verse 23

which He dried up., Exodus 14:21.
