Leviticus 22

Verse 1

the LORD. Hebrew. Jehovah. App-4.

spake. See note on Leviticus 5:14.


Verse 2

from. When subject to the following disabilities.

children. Hebrew sons.

hallow. See note on Leviticus 12:4.


Verse 3

soul. Hebrew. nephesh. App-13. Here rendered "soul", but in Leviticus 21:11 inaccurately rendered "body". See note on Leviticus 19:28.

cut off from My presence. Occurs only here in the Pentateuch; elsewhere, "cut off from his people". See note on Leviticus 7:20. Accounted for here by the seriousness of the offence.


Verse 4

the dead. Hebrew. nephesh (App-13), rendered "soul" in preceding verse. Heb = "a dead soul". Compare Leviticus 22:11.

seed goeth. See Leviticus 15:16.


Verse 6

soul. Hebrew. nephesh. (App-13.) Here again rendered soul. See verses: Leviticus 22:3, Leviticus 22:4, Leviticus 22:11, and note on Leviticus 19:28.

wash = bathe. See note on Leviticus 14:9.


Verse 9

keep Mine ordinance = observe My observance. Figure of speech Polyptoton, App-6, for emphasis. Compare Leviticus 18:30.

ordinance = charge.

sin = penalty. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause). App-6.


Verse 11

soul. Hebrew. nephesh (App-13). Here put by Figure of speech Synecdoche (of Part), for "any person", i.e. a heathen slave.

he = the slave so bought. Emphatic.

meat = Figure of speech Metonymy (of Species), for any kind of food. App-6.


Verse 12

a stranger = a man (Hebrew. "ish. App-14.), i.e. an Israelite, but not of Aaron's seed (Numbers 16:40).

offering = heave offering. Hebrew. terumah. App-43.


Verse 14

unwittingly: i.e. through ignorance. See Leviticus 4:2, Leviticus 4:22, Leviticus 4:27; Leviticus 5:15, Leviticus 5:18.


Verse 15

offer = offer up, as a heave offering. Hebrew. rum. App-43.


Verse 16
